folding rulers

Something pretty satisfying about stretching one of these out then doing the concertina dance at the end and snapping it shut. What is your poison?? The wood rule w/ graduated 6" extension slide... or the old bi-swing 3-footer with brass joints. How about bombproof fiberglass (had to be called Rhino right)? Folding ruler prawn below. Start w/ the Hultafors Downy Birch, they practically invented the folding ruler, further reading.

James- I feel like I'm all over your posts these days with comments (either by twitter or here). Apologies for the hounding.

A good friend of mine is a mason and refers to these as a mason's rule. His father (also a mason) will ONLY use a mason's rule to measure. He says its the most accurate form of measure. A text he just sent me (when I asked him for some detail) says, "Mason's rule is white with brick courses on back. Carpenter's rule is brown and has a slide for inside measurements. Engineer's rule is white too, measures in feet and tenths, not inches..."

Might be more info than you were after....

I'm guessing my dad's masons rules were not quite as accurate...as they were mostly used as swords.

Side note: I found my wife's grandfather's rule in his old tool after his death. One of my prized possessions.

When I was at school I was obsessed with rulers and protractors and compasses. These are a few of my new favorites:
